SECOND CHANCE BEER COMPANY

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

Over several years, I collaborated with Second Chance Beer Company on a variety of creative projects, including limited-edition beer labels, a large-scale mural, and a custom delivery truck wrap. As our working relationship grew, each project built on the last, giving me the opportunity to create illustrations that became recognizable extensions of the brewery's personality.

DELIVERY TRUCK WRAP

Made on Adobe Illustrator (2019)

As Second Chance expanded distribution throughout San Diego, they commissioned a custom wrap for their delivery truck that would stand and unmistakably theirs.

BEHIND THE WORK

I explored multiple concepts before developing two complementary illustrations. After reviewing the initial designs, the owners requested additional personal details, including references to themselves and the diverse community that supports the brewery.

RESULT

The finished wrap combined custom illustration with the brewery's signature colors and branding. Seeing one of my Hazy IPA illustrations incorporated into the back of the truck was an unexpected detail that tied the entire collaboration together.

FACE THE HAZE

Can LABEL ILLUSTRATION, Made with ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR (2018)

What began as an invitation to a brewery event turned into one of my longest client relationships. After discovering my artwork on Instagram, Second Chance invited me to create an illustration for the release of their Face the Haze series.

BEHIND THE WORK

Inspired by 1970s psychedelic graphics, I developed an illustration of smoke formed entirely from the repeated words "Hazed 4 Daze." The concept reflected my signature approach of layering letters and numbers to create larger images. After completing the original painting, I recreated the artwork in Adobe Illustrator for production.

RESULT

The illustration was printed on a black background that mimicked the painting and was the first of three labels I created for the brewery's Hazy IPA series.

INDOOR MURAL

Acrylic Paint, 8 ft x 11 ft (2019)

Second Chance wanted a mural that would become a recognizable destination inside the brewery while encouraging visitors to share their experience online.

BEHIND THE WORK

The owners requested that the mural feel hand-painted rather than graphic or overly polished. I developed a concept featuring hands offering beer hops, referencing both the brewing process and the brewery's commitment to giving back to the community. It was also requested to intentionally leave empty space within the composition so visitors could stand beneath the artwork for photos.

RESULT

The mural was completed over approximately two months during business hours, giving customers the opportunity to watch the painting evolve and interact with the process as it unfolded.

HAZY IPA

Can LABEL ILLUSTRATION, Made with ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR (2018)

For the next limited release of the Hazy IPA series, Second Chance wanted artwork inspired by Independence Day without relying on familiar patriotic imagery.

BEHIND THE WORK

Rather than using the American flag, I focused on the Statue of Liberty as a recognizable symbol of freedom. I replaced the torch's flame with a beer hop and incorporated the brewery's chalice logo, while carrying over the smoke motif from the previous release to visually connect the series.

RESULT

The artwork was printed directly onto a silver chrome can, giving the colors additional vibrancy. It quickly became one of the brewery's most popular limited-edition labels. They also invited me to recreate the can illustration live during their release event.

DISCO BALLOON

Can Label Illustration, Made with Adobe Illustrator (2019)

The third and final release in the Hazy IPA series was completed on a tight production schedule. Second Chance wanted the artwork to respond directly to the beer's name while keeping the concept simple.

I created a minimal illustration of a balloon inspired by the reflective surface of a disco ball, allowing the playful name to become the focus of the design.

The finished label completed the trilogy of Hazy IPA releases while maintaining a distinct visual identity for each beer.
